An Innovation in Education

Academic Focus

Our program is unique to the learning environment. The living environment, the specific social, geographical and natural context provided by the extended stay program dictates the curriculum with a particular focus on the social and emotional development of  boys.

The curriculum is driven by student experiences in the natural environment and is reinforced back in the mainstream classroom at Kent Town. Overall, the curriculum is constructed from experience and the learning environment in which the boys are placed. The key considerations of the program will:

  • Allow the experience and environment to dictate the curriculum
  • Be based on a series of  belief statements about learning
  • Focus on learning how-to-learn, learning by doing, spiritual learning and reflection
  • Identify the outcomes that can be achieved during the program
  • Place the student in learning situations that are specifically designed to involve them
  • Use a thematic approach to teaching with the ability for all subject areas to contribute to an area of study
  • Allow students and staff to negotiate the content and outcomes
  • Focus on research and the ability for students to be involved in longer-term projects.
