Recognising Outstanding Character, Service and Achievement
Each year, special prizes are awarded to boys who have displayed outstanding character, service and achievement. Among these are named prizes that honour the memory and achievements of old scholars and past staff.
The first named prize was established by local businessman Edwin Smith in 1881, the Smith Prize for History. Today, more than 60 prizes bear the names of individuals and families within our community.
Named prizes celebrate excellence in a variety of fields, including academic achievement, character, leadership and service. They not only reward hard work and dedication, but also encourage students to pursue their passions and make the most of their time at the College.
Prizes are established through an endowed gift, ensuring that they can be awarded in perpetuity. The endowment is carefully managed, with the investment earnings used to fund the presentation of a gift voucher and prize book for the recipient. While gifts made to establish a named prize are deeply valued, they are not tax-deductible.
Each prize is awarded at an appropriate College event. From time to time, named prize donors and/or family members are invited to attend the awards assembly. Prize recipients are provided with a citation about the person or family the prize commemorates, ensuring that the legacy of those honoured continues to be recognised and appreciated by future generations of students.
