Academic Support & Extension

Developing the skills to become successful, independent, lifelong learners

At Prince Alfred College, we encourage boys to develop their natural curiosity and love of learning, and support them on their academic journey. Whether a boy has particular learning needs or requires education that goes beyond the core curriculum, we offer a range of academic support and extension opportunities guided by our high-quality teaching.

Our teachers and specialist staff know how to identify when a boy needs extra support or extension. With a range of opportunities available to them, our teachers work with boys and their families to develop personalised student success plans to ensure each boy receives the support they need to thrive.

Academic Extension is expressed through a range of opportunities both within and beyond the classroom. Within the curriculum, subjects such as X‑Mathematics, Advanced Science, Advanced History, and higher‑level English and Languages provide students with sustained intellectual challenge and the opportunity to engage with subject specific rigour.

Academic Extension

Academic Extension sessions are scheduled on set days throughout the year and offer students the opportunity to explore topics beyond the formal curriculum. These sessions are designed to stimulate curiosity, broaden intellectual horizons, and enrich the learning experience at Prince Alfred College. The program evolves annually, with previous topics including “Thoroughbreds: The Legacy of Three”, “The Social Mobility of the Longbow”, “Censorship in the Arts”, and “Italian Opera from Monteverdi to Mozart”.

Subject Journals

The tradition of publishing student journals is a distinctive cornerstone of the academic life at Prince Alfred College. For decades, publications such as the History Journal, Shades of Red, and the Science Journal have provided a platform for students to present original research, writing, and creative work to the wider College community. Students take on the roles of committee members, writers, editors, designers, and promotional leads, contributing to a rich culture of scholarship and collaboration

We enable every boy to pursue his passions by providing expert instruction across a broad range of activities, ensuring each student has the opportunity to excel in his areas of interest.
