Brian Morgan Hurn OAM (1939-2015) was a distinguished South Australian sportsman, community leader and local government advocate whose contributions to cricket, football and civic life earned him widespread respect across the state. A student of Prince Alfred College, Hurn developed a passion for sport that would lead to an outstanding career both on and off the field.
A talented all-rounder, Hurn represented South Australia in first-class cricket between 1957 and 1967, playing 31 matches as a left-handed batsman and right-arm medium-fast bowler. He was also a champion footballer with the Angaston Football Club, where he won the prestigious Mail Medal as the competition's best player. His sporting achievements made him one of the Barossa's most celebrated athletes.
Beyond sport, Hurn devoted himself to public service. He served as Mayor of the Barossa Council from 1996 to 2014 and later became President of the Local Government Association of South Australia, representing councils across the state. His leadership helped strengthen regional communities and promote the interests of local government.
In recognition of his service to local government and the community, Hurn was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM). His remarkable legacy spans sport, public service and community leadership, reflecting a lifetime of dedication to the Barossa and South Australia. He remains an outstanding example of the contribution Prince Alfred College Old Scholars have made to their communities.
