Sir Charles John “Jack” Glover was a prominent South Australian architect, businessman, civic leader and Prince Alfred College Old Scholar whose service to Adelaide continued a remarkable family tradition of public leadership.
Born in Adelaide on 30 August 1902, he was the son of Adelaide's first Lord Mayor, Charles Richmond John Glover. He was educated at Prince Alfred College, St Mark's College and the University of Adelaide, where he developed the foundations for a distinguished career in architecture and public service.
After completing his architectural training, Glover established a successful professional career and became one of the first South Australians to be registered as an architect following the introduction of professional registration. His work and business interests brought him into contact with many of the state's civic, charitable and cultural organisations, reflecting a lifelong commitment to community service.
Following in his father's footsteps, Glover entered municipal government and was elected Lord Mayor of Adelaide from 1960 to 1963. His mayoralty coincided with a period of significant growth and modernisation for Adelaide, and he was widely respected for his practical leadership, civic vision and dedication to improving the city's amenity and public life.
Beyond local government, Sir Charles served on numerous boards and community organisations. He represented the City of Adelaide on the Board of Management of the Metropolitan Infectious Diseases Hospital and contributed to a range of charitable, professional and public bodies throughout his career. His influence extended well beyond architecture and municipal affairs, helping shape Adelaide's civic and social development during the mid-twentieth century.
Knighted in recognition of his service to the community, Sir Charles became one of Adelaide's most respected civic figures. His life exemplified the values of leadership, service and commitment to others that Prince Alfred College seeks to instil in its students. Together with his father, he remains part of a unique family legacy, with two generations of the Glover family serving as Lord Mayor of Adelaide and making significant contributions to the city's history.
Sir Charles John Glover's enduring legacy lies in his professional achievements, civic leadership and unwavering dedication to Adelaide, leaving a lasting impact on the community he served throughout his life.
