Middle Years

Welcome to the Middle Years

In Years 7 to 9 at Prince Alfred College, our boys continue to explore their place in the world through an education emphasising intellectual, emotional, social, and physical growth. With a focus on academic excellence, co-curricular enhancement and deeply embedded wellbeing care, our boys become young men of confidence and character, ready to excel in their Senior Years.

Academic excellence

With high-quality teaching and learning, our curriculum focuses on educating the whole boy through an engaging program that transforms boys into capable young men. With a focus on academic excellence and inquiry-led discovery, our boys learn how to discover and apply in-depth knowledge and practical skills in the real world.

In the Middle Years, boys learn the practical foundations for learning success including good time management, navigating to different learning locations, how to manage homework and ensure assessment deadlines are met. Boys are set regular homework across their range of subjects to support classroom learning. The frequency and length will vary between subjects.

With the introduction of elective choices, our boys explore personal interests and strengths within a framework that supports a breadth of opportunities and development of their intellectual curiosity.

Specialist programs

Specialist programs add rigour and richness to our curriculum and enhance the delivery of an all-round education for our boys. Boys in Year 7 to 9 enjoy a range of activities, tours, excursions, camps, academic competitions and industry talks.

Our Outdoor Education programs focus on developing life skills such as communication, teamwork and resilience.

Year 8 our boys participate in EduKart, a week-long program developing life skills through the construction of an operational go kart. The boys love the opportunity to test them out on a real track at the end of the week!

A highlight of a boys journey at PAC is the 5-week extended residential program, held at our College-owned campus on the Yorke Peninsula called 'Wambana'.

Academic support and extension

The Middle Years curriculum is designed to cater for the varying needs and interests of boys in these critical years. We provide differentiation of learning within the classroom setting, as well as enrichment opportunities designed to encourage boys to broaden their knowledge in a range of areas beyond the set curriculum.

Through regular assessment and tutor feedback, we monitor how each boy is performing and identify any needs for support or academic extension.

Our teachers and specialist staff know how to identify when a boy needs extra support. Our teachers work with boys and parents to develop a personalised student success plans to ensure each boy receives the support they need to strive.

Student Wellbeing

Each boy has a dedicated tutor who works with him in a small group of his House peers for Year 7, 8 and 9. Tutors work with students, their parents and staff to ensure boys receive the individual academic and wellbeing support they need, and that early issues are quickly identified and addressed.

Guided by our mantra of, ‘Work Hard, Be Kind’ we make sure our boys know they are cared for, respected and valued as they thrive on their journey to becoming a well-rounded young man of good character.
