During the first week of the Term 3 break, nine Year 11 and 12 boarding students participated in the College’s inaugural New Zealand Agricultural Tour. The tour aimed to expose students to agricultural systems different from those found in Australia while highlighting the diverse opportunities available within this innovative and rapidly evolving industry.
Supported in part by the Mundulla Fund, the tour began with two days at Lincoln University, New Zealand’s leading agricultural tertiary institution and one of the premier agricultural universities in the Southern Hemisphere. Living on campus, students experienced university life firsthand while attending lectures and presentations on viticulture, sustainable farming systems, regenerative agriculture, the sheep industry and the role of legumes in productive farming enterprises.
Students also visited a range of agricultural businesses and operations across the South Island. Highlights included touring a salmon farm, where many enjoyed their first taste of sashimi; exploring a world-leading seed production facility that supports food production globally; and visiting a high-country beef and sheep stud property to gain insight into New Zealand’s livestock breeding and management processes.
