Supporting Tertiary Studies in Agriculture

Torrie Chapman Scholarship

The Torrie Chapman Scholarship, made possible through the estate of Mrs Torrie Chapman (1921-2016), provides vital support to Old Scholars of Prince Alfred College undertaking tertiary studies in agriculture or a related areaFor current recipient Edward Downing (PAC 2015-2018), this support has been life-changing.

"My name is Edward Downing and in 2020 I was fortunate enough to receive the Torrie Chapman Scholarship. After completing Year 12 in 2018, and taking a gap year to work and travel, I decided to commence an Agricultural Science degree at Adelaide University in 2020. As I was studying in the field of Agriculture, I was eligible to apply for the Torrie Chapman Scholarship, and I was grateful to be awarded the Scholarship through the College, a scholarship established to assist old scholars who undertake tertiary studies in agriculture.

Through the financial support of this scholarship, I was able to live in Adelaide in a share house and ensure that I was able to complete my studies to the best of my abilities. I have recently completed the three-year bachelor’s degree and have begun to work in the industry in a broadacre management role on a farm near Bordertown, as well as work on our family farm near Mundulla.

I am very excited for what the future holds, and I think there is no better time to be in agriculture, as the opportunities are endless. Without the philanthropy from the College, I would not be where I am today, and I am extremely thankful to the Torrie Chapman Scholarship, and all those involved, including Mr David Cornish."
