Michael Smyth obtained a First Class Honours degree in Zoology from the University of Adelaide. He was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship in 1960 to Exeter College, Oxford where he subsequently obtained a doctorate. He lectured at the University of California before returning to the University of Adelaide as Senior Lecturer in Zoology.
