Prince Alfred College Boaters

B.A. Richard commenced in Form IIA as a boarder in the Preparatory School. He finished in 1944 in Form VIC at Leaving Standard.
At the time of this donation Brian said;
“ I was in the Boarding House for five years and was a House Prefect in my last year. The straw Boater was purchased just prior to commencing school in 1940 (from John Martin’s department store in Adelaide) and somehow survived the five years, although it was not worn much in the latter years. Clothing regulations at school were relaxed somewhat during the war years, due to the need for the rationing of clothes, which made suitable clothing difficult to obtain.
The names on the hat are mostly printed because of the difficulty in trying to write with an ink nib on the rough straw surface (no ball point pen in those days). Many of the names were obtained over the span of five years at P.A.C. and the two teachers were asked to sign during the last few days at school in 1944 [Archivist -Note the 'R' embroidered top left of the crest for Rowing].
