In this week's article, Director of Boarding, Phil Noble discusses the annual Fishing Intercol, the Young Farmers' Challenge, the Rushton Cup and more.

The boarders did a fantastic job during Intercol week, representing their teams with excitement and skill on the field and enthusiasm and spirit as supporters. It was wonderful to watch these events and celebrate the end of the winter season. The boarding house was able to complete the Intercol season with the annual fishing Intercol with Saints. We once again hosted at the school's Scotts Creek Outdoor Education Centre on the Murray River. The team of Rupert Fletcher, Lachlan Davidson, Ned Davies, Sam Desmazures, Melique Andrews, Tristan Martin, Eddie Johnson, Nick Demianyk and Toby Noble did the job once again with a 10-9 fish victory. The full exciting story can be read here.

Earlier this week the prefects hard work and organisation saw the wonderful Young Boarders Challenge and Boarders Day BBQ. The boarders dressed in their tops and compete in a 6-event relay of challenges unique to boarding. Folding clothes, eating dumplings, making a bed, setting a mouse trap, rolling a swag and drinking some good old FU ice coffee. In the end it was the Year 12 teams that shown through with Best in Show going to Team – Charlton, L Johns, McInnes, Michael, Paulett and Venning, closely followed by Team – Adams, Bolwell, Daniel, B Johns, Wise and Wong and the Year 11 Team – Chapman, Charlick, Lines, O’Brien, Travers and Weckert taking 3rd place. At the same time our Year 11 volunteers were busy cooking the BBQ and feeding the crowd and raising money for our two boarding charities The Royal Flying Doctors Service and Ronald McDonald House.

We look forward to the revamped Rushton Cup on Thursday and another opportunity for our boarders to demonstrate their prowess and team work on the sporting field against the more fancied day boy’s side. A great fact is that the Boarders XVIII has representatives from 1st XVIII through to 5th XVIII while the day boys chose to mainly pick from the 1st and 2nd Squad, only time will tell whose selection process pays off!

The theme for NAIDOC Week 2021 is Heal Country, a theme rooted in recognition and action of greater protection of lands, waters, sacred sites and cultural heritage for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians. NAIDOC Week was officially celebrated from July 4-11 2021, however, given that this falls within the July school holidays it is often difficult for schools to celebrate and recognise this important week.

In a postponed NAIDOC event on August 26, The Smith Family organisation hosted its annual Indigenous Youth Leadership Program (IYLP) dinner at the Adelaide Convention Centre. The Smith Family IYLP program focuses on delivering leadership and educational opportunities for young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, who will go on to make positive contributions as future leaders in their communities, the workforce and society more broadly. There are currently ten PAC students engaged with the IYLP program, they were joined by students from five other Adelaide schools for this fantastic night of food, laughter and reflection of the Heal Country theme.

The keynote speaker for the evening was Keenan Smith, a Wirangu, Mirning and Kolkatha man, who spoke passionately and positively about Heal Country and what it means for young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the 21st century. The students were engaged and empowered by Keenan, knowing that soon they will be active and contributing leaders in society, something that PAC looks to instil in all its students. A truly great night; enjoyed by all.

Prince Alfred College acknowledges and recognises the traditional custodians of the land on which we work and learn – the Kaurna people, and pay respect to their Elders, past, present and emerging.
