Our children have looked with great interest as the eggs have hatched and the young chicks have been transferred to the nesting pen. This have provided rich dialogue as the parents drop off their children in morning. In our inquiry this term the children have been investigating how we communicate. The Chapple Children visited the chicks and listened to the sounds they were making.
We asked the children what did they think the chicks were saying.
“It’s nice and warm.” - Bryan
“He’s saying I like you.” - Elon
“He’s hungry.” - Isabelle
“We are babies” - Charles
“I’m thirsty.” - Archie T
Listening to the chicks, gave the children the opportunity to think about the needs and wants of animals. The children independently transferred this knowledge and built a chicken cage using blocks in the outside play.
