In this week's article, Head of Preparatory School, John Stewart discusses National Co-Educator and Early Childhood Educators' Week.

Over the coming few weeks, we recognise two important groups of people: the Preparatory School’s Support Staff and the Early Learning Centre’s (ELC) Co-educators. During National Support Staff week, celebrated during Week 5, we recognise and celebrate the efforts of our Support Staff in the Preparatory School who work diligently each day to support our children and their learning. During National Early Childhood Educators Day on 1 September, we recognise the efforts of our specialised staff who work in our ELC.

The efforts of these two distinct groups of people cannot be overstated. Our Preparatory School Support Staff work with our most at-risk children who require additional support to meet the baseline expectations for their year level. They provide essential guidance and assistance for the boys each day, as well as crucial pastoral care and a kind and willing ear to listen.

Our Co-educators in the ELC also play an essential role. Not only are they present to guide the children in the early stages of their development and learning, but they also ensure that our program operates before and after regular school hours as well as during the holiday breaks. They bring a passion for early childhood education to our centre, which is evident in how they present the learning spaces and play opportunities, and in how they build relationships with both the children and their families.

Far too often, the efforts of these two unique groups of people can be overlooked. Their tasks can often be thankless. Tending the children's injuries and needs, changing nappies, helping a child settle, or comforting a crying child who misses his mother. Being an SSO or Co-educator is a special calling, and we greatly appreciate those who have accepted that calling and care for our children in the ELC and Preparatory School.

Our school has enjoyed success in no small part due to the efforts of these wonderful people. I want to thank them on behalf of the PAC community for their commitment, effort, and compassion towards ensuring our children’s experience at school is a positive one as they grow as students and individuals. So, this week, when we recognise the efforts of our SSOs and Early Childhood Educators, I hope that you will take the opportunity to thank these unsung heroes of our school for all they do for our students.
