Aboriginal Students Co-ordinator Monica Magann discusses the recent Aboriginal Youth Program Yaitya Tita, the 2021 Reconciliation SA Apology Breakfast and more.

Yaitya Tita
On the evening of Monday 3 February, PAC hosted the Aboriginal Youth Program Yaitya Tita for their first meeting back for 2021. We had anticipated 65 in attendance from about eight local schools, however we had over 100 arrive for a BBQ and Games Night. Uncle John Lochowiak did a Welcome to Country and a Smoking Ceremony which was a great way to start the year. Year 7 – 12 students had a chance to kick the footy, do some team building activities and plan activities for 2021.

2021 Reconciliation SA Apology Breakfast
The Headmaster, staff and students gathered together at two tables for this special breakfast to honour and listen to the stories of the Stolen Generation survivors. Year 12 student Zac Bishop’s grandmother, Aunty Bev Ewen, joined us at this event. Over 1300 people attended this breakfast at the Convention Centre including senior Elders, politicians and schools as well. The mood was sombre understandably, however the feeling of unity was very strong.

PAC RAP Meeting
New Deputy Head Greg Atterton joined the Headmaster, College leaders John Stewart, Melanie Garland, students and stakeholders for our first meeting back to review reconciliation initiatives and plan for 2021. Themes have been released for National Reconciliation Week and NAIDOC Week. Prince Alfred College continues to grow in our understanding of recognising Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, histories and cultures. It is a most rewarding journey.
