In terms of cultural learning, the month of May has been significant for the Prince Alfred College community. And whilst National Sorry Day (26 May) and National Reconciliation Week (27 May – 3 June) are the key dates in May, student and staff learning has surged throughout the month of May as we take this year's theme to heart: More than a Word: Reconciliation Takes Action.
It has been heartening to see action happening across the campus. Reverend Dickens led the Middle and Senior Schools through a chapel service on the NRW theme which featured key speaker Tarlee Leondaris, Covenanting and International Mission Officer for the Synod of SA Uniting Church. On Wednesday 27 May, students, parents and staff joined Mr Fenner and Mr Atterton to hear the story of Laura Knowles: Stolen Generation mother and Nanna to PAC Year 10 student Tyson Stallan. Tyson’s mum Michelle and Uncle Wade came as special guests so the PAC Community could learn about the loss and trauma for stolen children and their families, and how this impacted their own cultural connections and identity.
On Thursday 27 May 20 PAC parents, staff and students filled two tables at the National Reconciliation Breakfast at the Convention Centre. Over 1700 people were in attendance. The positive energy and unity in the huge hall were easily identified across private, public, education, government and industry sectors. Learning activities involving Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples cultural wisdom will continue at PAC ,in the days, weeks, and years to come. And importantly, we are learning how to put this knowledge into meaningful action.
