Podcast: S2 Ep2 Service Learning

News
18 March 2026

Year 11 students, Harry and Tom, talk with Ms Melody Marshall about the service learning opportunities available to boys at PAC and the life-long benefits of participating in meaningful acts of service.

Welcome to the second episode of the Prince Alfred College Podcast for 2026. Join Year 11 students Harry and Tom, as they explore the many and varied service learning opportunities at the school and how participating in service based activities benefits our students.

Ms Marshall is a Senior School English Teacher and CAS Coordinator at the College, and also an active participant in some of our service learning activities. She shares her unique start to teaching in the Pilbara region of WA, as well as how the College has evolved during the 20 years she has taught at PAC.

Upon hearing how Ms Marshall started on her service learning journey, Harry said “I loved hearing about Ms Marshall’s involvement and experiences in rural indigenous communities. I never knew this about her and found it to be an interesting and unique way for Ms Marshall to develop her love for helping others.”

The lifelong skills that can be learned from helping others before ourselves is a key part of being a Princes Man. Being able to support others, being empathetic, and being intentional about making a positive difference are character traits we want all our boys to develop. Our interviewers, Harry and Tom, both display these traits through their volunteer work in the Prep reading program and Year 5 camp support roles and also in the wider community with Kickstart for Kids, Ronald McDonald House and Mary Magdalene Centre.

Harry shared some advice for boys thinking about getting involved in service learning, “I would advise starting small with something like prep-reading as it is done within the school and school hours. Then progress to activities like Kickstart for Kids and work your way up to beginning to spend your Saturdays helping people. Undertaking the Duke of Edinburgh program would be a stretch goal many boys could aspire to.”

This sounds like sage advice for people of any age.
