State Debaters start strong at Nationals

This week, three of our debaters from Prince Alfred College are representing South Australia in the National Schools Debating Championships in Hobart.

Given that the team consists of only 7 debaters, chosen from around the state, this is in itself an excellent achievement and we wish them well in their competition this week. As an initial progress update, Max Thomas yesterday reported back on the first day of their competition:

Today we had two debates at Elizabeth College. The first was an environment topic against Victoria on the topic ‘that we should grant sole responsibility for management of non-urban, publicly owned areas to First Nations people’. We unfortunately lost 2-1 on the affirmative, but were still pleased with the case we ran, considering the Victorian team were considerably good. Our second debate was against the Northern Territory, again on the affirmative, but this time on the motion ‘that we should abolish all sin taxes (i.e., smoking, gambling taxes etc.)”. We were pleased to come off with a 3-0 unanimous decision, finishing off the first day of the tournament with 4 out of 6 adjudicators.

This is a wonderful start from our SA Schools Debating Team and we wish our boys, and their fellow SA team members, all the best for the remaining debates this week.
