To start these discussions, we have been looking into our facial features, and paying close attention to the features we all share, and the ones which make us different, like our eye colour, hair colour and skin colour. The children have been representing their thinking by creating faces using colourful loose parts on the light table.
As we begin to unpack what makes us unique, children are able to build their ongoing sense of identity, which helps to shape their understanding of who they are, where they belong, and what they can share with the world. Our sense of identity is what drives our self-esteem, our self-awareness, our confidence, our sense of belonging and our relationships with others. Shaped by children’s ongoing experiences within their families and communities, social influences and cultural heritage, children begin to understand who they are, and how special their uniqueness is.
