Ashton Artworks donation

Generous Donation of Ashton Watercolours

Margaret Young, her sister Jane, and brother Sam Warwick Inglis (PAC 1957-1962) have donated four watercolours by James Ashton to Prince Alfred College. These paintings were originally gifted to their grandfather, Frank Wade, by Ashton himself, a close friend and fellow Freemason.

The family decided to donate the artworks after reading an article about Ashton by College Archivist Kate Pulford, in the Princes Record. Ashton, a notable artist and former art master at the College, had previously donated a significant collection of his works upon his retirement in 1925.

The College is grateful for the donation, which will be displayed in the Ashton Room alongside other original works. The paintings, along with other selected works by Ashton, will also be loaned to the Royal South Australian Society of Arts, Institute Building North Terrace, for a special exhibition during the 2025 SA History Festival, celebrating 100 years since Ashton’s retirement from the College.
