Professor David Weller is a specialist in the field of general practice and runs the department dedicated to this within the Division of Community Health Science at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. This general practice department was the first of its type in the world.
David’s role at the university is to teach medical students the skills of general practice. His department includes a clinical practice which looks after a population of about 6000 people in Edinburgh. David has conducted research examining how general practice can best contribute to earlier diagnosis, improved survival, and better treatments for people with cancer. He has also increasingly taken on senior management roles in the university during his time there.
David Weller graduated from the University of Adelaide in 1983, where he returned to undertake PhD studies. He was senior lecturer and head of the general practice department at the Flinders University School of Medicine before taking up his current position in 2000.
