A boarder from Maitland, Brian Polkinghorne has used his agricultural skills and commitment as a minister of the word for the benefit of the people of Tanzania.
In 1974 the Australian Council of Churches funded Brian as an agricultural missionary to establish The Kilacha Production and Training Centre in Tanzania. Following time ministering back in Australia Brian was requested by the African Evangelistic Enterprise to open up a large reforestation project in Tanzania. The project was a huge success with over 6.7 million trees being planted.
Based around the principle that ‘the earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof’ (Psalm 24), Brian has sought to balance theology, agriculture and Landcare issues to increase the productivity of arable land and provide a natural resource through the planting of trees. Over ten years he has overseen the planting of 6.4 million trees.
