For twenty five years Richard Thorne has coached chess at Prince Alfred College. Richard’s link with the College commenced with his son Brenton in 1982 and continues with his grandson Angus in the Preparatory School.
In 2010 Richard established through the PAC Foundation Scholarship Fund the Richard Thorne Scholarship. Richard’s motivations in establishing the scholarship includes the desire to assist students of proven academic ability, who would be precluded from attending the College for financial reasons, and who would benefit from the scholarship. In awarding the scholarship, candidates’ attendance at a government school and their ability in the game of chess is considered favourably.
Richard Thorne attended Adelaide High School and has enjoyed a successful career in stock-broking, property development and as proprietor of Winston Music. Richard has been included in this Gallery in recognition of his nurturing students of all ages who share his passion for chess.
